British government has included eleven further nations to its travel alert list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only recently, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after several notable incidents including the deadly loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the purification method.

However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Advice for Tourists

Authorities minister Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should know the signs of methanol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."

The complete register of countries noted as presenting a danger of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
